Late last night, 95 yo Kokoda veteran and great-grandfather Bill Ryan locked the gates of a Road Maintenance Depot full of equipment in Sydney, challenging Downer Group to tear up their $2.6bn contract to build Adani’s Carmichael coal mine.
Citizens also locked up 9 more Downer Group industrial premises last night in Melbourne, Brisbane, Townsville, Dunedin, Bathurst, Gympie and Wodonga.
After publicly committing a crime Bill stayed close to his son and lawyer for the day. Who else to visit first up but his local MP, Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison. He nails it!
Giving up on Scott Morrison, Bill decided to engage local residents down the beach instead. Listen to your elders and register for a direct action group!
With no police action yet, Bill decided to shuffle by some cop shops on his walker. People who know Bill will tell you he’s a cheeky bastard.
If Downer do decide to get Bill Ryan arrested, he’ll be the oldest person arrested in Australian history. Breaking his own record! Bill has already personally visited Downer’s headquarters, spoken with a Downer Group executive, and vows to escalate his actions until Downer get out of bed with Adani or they chuck him in jail.
“Better me being in jail than Downer helping Adani destroy the Reef, take our water, and even take our money. There’s plenty of other citizens ready to get arrested too. Our weather will become more and more extreme. Climate change threatens my grandkids and great grandkids. I’ll keep fighting for their future.”
Bill’s actions are part of our intergenerational campaign to ‘convince’ Downer to end their business relationship with Adani. Downer do not need this Adani contract and can pull out now without financial penalty.
Downer doing the right thing would be a major setback for Adani’s plans to open the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere. We will escalate our actions until they choose the right side of history. The world is watching.
