60yo public hospital employee Merry had never done anything like this before. Today she ‘locked-on’ with Rosie in the offices of Downer, joined by the globally infamous/fabulous Climate Guardian Angels and passionate Melbourne citizens. They occupied the offices of Downer Group for 4 hours, challenging Downer on their plans to build and operate Adani’s proposed Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin.
We’ve previously warned Downer of our direct action intentions in the media and through a recent letter to the CEO. As no reply to the letter had been received, our occupying citizens called on Downer Group for an answer, four days before the deadline outlined in the letter.
Downer called the police and said what a safety hazard we were. We were quick to point out the irony, considering the ecocidal plans Downer have with Adani. The police recognized we were friendly folk and left!
Yes, Downer are in bed with Adani, threatening to destroy Aboriginal homelands, the Reef, and the 70,000 jobs that rely on its health. Extreme weather has become normal and will get worse. Climate change threatens the lives and livelihoods of our kids and grandkids.
Downer refused us an audience or phone call with their CEO. So after 4 hours we left, reminding them they have 4 more days until we target them with massive civil resistance around the country. They do not need this Adani contract and can pull out now without financial penalty. Downer doing the right thing would be a major setback for Adani’s plans to open the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere. We will target them until they choose the right side of history.
The occupying citizens today received professional Nonviolent Direct Action training to ensure a safe action. Please donate today so we can train more people all around the country to Stop Adani with safe direct actions.
The best way to STOP Adani? Take Downer from under them. Contact us to find out more.
In 40 years time people will be talking about the campaign to stop Adani like they now talk about the Franklin. “Where were you and what did you do?”
