The Queensland Labor Government plans to give 12 BILLION litres of water each year to multi-billionaire Gautam Adani. That’s equivalent to 3 YEARS drinking water for every Queenslander.

If Adani’s mine goes ahead, it is very likely other mega-mines will be dug in the Galilee Basin, using more precious water in the driest continent on Earth. The Queensland Labor Government would also give water away to billionaires Gina Rinehart, Clive Palmer and GVK Reddy.

These mines are situated close to the Great Artesian Basin, a key resource for agriculture across inland Australia. The communities and ecosystems in the region are already highly reliant on groundwater and this could also affect the acidity and salinity of soils.

Clearing the land for the mine itself – an area equivalent to Queensland’s Moreton Island – will also likely reduce local rainfall considerably. If the springs go dry, even temporarily, endemic species will not survive and will become extinct in the region.
